Diploma and Certification

"Certification"

A "Certified Piano Tuner-Technician" is someone who has graduated from the Butler School of Piano Technology. They have passed the school's exam requirements and are now certified to advertise using The Butler School graduate logo.

Although our course is designed with the RPT examinations in mind, it doesn't mean you must join the Guild and become an RPT. You may just wish to enroll in the school and work toward receiving a diploma from The Butler School of Piano Technology.

To obtain a Butler School diploma, you must pass a final exam that is divided into two parts: tuning and written.

1. Tune a piano

  • a) Set A4 to A440 - 5 minutes
  • b) Tune the F3/F4 temperament - 20 minutes
  • c) Tune the mid-range, C3 up to B4 - 15 minutes
  • d) Tune the Bass - 10 minutes
  • e) Tune the Treble - 20 minutes
  • f) Tune the Unisons, C3 up to B4 - 25 minutes

The total time allowed for the tuning exam is 95 minutes. Unless you're willing to travel to our studio, you must submit the tuning via the internet.

When submitting the tuning exam video, you will combine steps a-c in one video, steps d and e in another video, and step f in the last video.

It is essential to follow the time frame. If you exceed the time limit, you will lose points. A score of 90% is considered passing.

2. Written Exam

The written exam will cover tuning theory questions and technical questions. There is no time frame for this exam. It should be considered an "open-book" exam. A score of 90% is passing.

Once you have passed these exams, you will be granted a diploma from The Butler School of Piano Technology. You can then advertise as a "Certified Aural Tuner-Technician.
