6 Month Accelerated Course Overview
The expedited six-month Aural Tuning and Repair Course program differs significantly from our standard course. Students are expected, to a considerable extent, to engage as full-time students.
We cover the same curriculum as the standard program. Each week, a designated amount of material must be completed. Consequently, to ensure that you are progressing effectively, I will work with you via online sessions. Therefore, you must have a good internet connection. Also, you’ll need to be available during the day, during the week. I don’t teach in the evenings or on weekends. Expect to meet two to three times a week, more if needed.
It is necessary to have a dedicated piano exclusively for tuning practice. Since this piano is used for tuning, it will not be kept in tune. Consequently, it will not serve as an instrument suitable for playing or instructional use. Additionally, the instrument must be in reasonably good playing condition. Just as one would not choose a worn-out instrument to learn to play the piano, an old or poorly maintained piano is not suitable for learning to tune pianos.
You will be working concurrently on the tuning and technical lessons. Therefore, you’ll need to acquire a vertical and grand action model. To qualify as a “Registered Piano Technician”, you must assemble and regulate a grand and vertical action model. The technical exam also requires you to perform several kinds of repairs. Naturally, you’ll need the appropriate tools for this work. We don’t sell tools, and they can be costly; it is not necessary to acquire them all at once. But I’ll put you in touch with a piano supply house where you can obtain them. But to give you an idea, the tools that you’ll need to begin the course will cost between $300 and 500.
